With a plot like this, the game needed a soundtrack that would reflect Madeline's struggles while carrying players through a setting that’s much stranger than initially thought. The young Madeline uses the task of climbing the titular mountain as a way to overcome troubles in her personal life. McConnell’s score, which can switch from intimidating to jaunty at the drop of a hat, helps accentuate the game’s tone and is one of the reasons it’s still spoken so highly of today.Ĭeleste is a game about loneliness, mental illness and searching for peace within yourself. Grim Fandango features dialogue and characters that revel in dark humor. As the game’s art style and characters are heavily inspired by Día de Los Muertos, there are also tracks that blend in traditional Mexican instruments. Since the game is filled with more shady characters and shadier lighting than a classic noir film, composer Peter McConnell relied on a variety of jazzy instruments to help tell the story. It follows professional Grim Reaper Manny Calavera after he discovers the company he works for is stealing premium travel packages from their clients that would help them reach the afterlife. Grim Fandango is an adventure game that takes players through the seedy underbelly of purgatory.
